How to get My Clippings.txt off your Kindle

1

Plug your Kindle into your computer

Use the USB cable that came with it. Once it's connected, your Kindle shows up like a USB stick, called Kindle, in Finder on a Mac or in File Explorer on Windows.

2

Open the documents folder

Inside it you'll find a file called My Clippings.txt. Every highlight and note you've ever made on that Kindle is in there, across every book, in the order you made them.

3

Drop it on this page

Drag the file straight from the Kindle onto the box above, or copy it to your desktop first if you'd rather. It doesn't matter how big it is, because it never has to travel anywhere.

Read on a Kindle Scribe, a Paperwhite or an older Kindle with a keyboard? They all keep the same file in the same place, so this works the same way for every one of them.

Questions people ask

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your own browser and everything happens on your computer. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, and if you close the tab it's gone.
Where do I find My Clippings.txt?
Plug your Kindle into your computer with a USB cable. It shows up like a USB drive, and inside it there's a folder called documents. The file is in there, called My Clippings.txt.
Why are there duplicate highlights in my file?
Every time you stretch or shorten a highlight on your Kindle, it saves the new version and keeps the old one too. This tool keeps the longest version of each passage and moves any note you wrote on the shorter one across to it.
Does it work with highlights from the Kindle app on my phone?
The phone and desktop apps don't write a My Clippings.txt file, so this tool can't see those. If you have ThinkerNotes Pro, you can bring those in with the Kindle bookmark instead, which reads them from your Kindle notebook page.
What does the Markdown look like?
Each book gets a heading with the author underneath, every highlight is a quote with its page and location, and your notes sit right under the passage you wrote them on. It pastes cleanly into Obsidian, Notion, Logseq or anything else that understands Markdown.

Name three things from the last book you highlighted.

Most people can't, even with every highlight saved. ThinkerNotes keeps what you actually took from each book, in your own words, and brings it back the moment it's relevant again.
